Ray Jackson

Ray Jackson 1931 – 1989

This is a tribute to a man who was a brilliant young actor and one of the kindest people in the world.

When one is young you never think about sickness or dying, so when it happens it is devastating to the partner who is left.

RAY JACKSON was my soul mate, my life time lover, my partner and most of all my friend we were together for just 40 yrs. But as they say “The Good Die Young” and the price of great love, brings great misery when one of you dies, and to this very day I am still lost without him.

Sir Geoffrey Faber (1889 – 1961), was Ray’s mentor. He was the chairman of Faber and Faber the Publishers, from 1929 until his retirement in 1960.  He became a prominent figure in the world of publishing and as President of the Publishers’ Association fought a successful campaign in 1940 to prevent taxation on books. Books were made exempt as they still are. He was knighted in 1954.

Hi Eric, I have just stumbled upon your affectionate and very moving tribute to Ray and would like to express my sadness that he is no longer with us. Ray and I worked together in ‘Under the Frozen Falls’ and you and I met on many occasions during the Heaven and Hell glory days. At that time I was known as Peter Scott, reverting later (thanks to American Actors Equity) to my birth name of Peter Scott-Smith. Online I use my blogging pseudonym ‘MoonWink’. I wish you happiness and good health over the Christmas season and remember you and Ray with great fondness.

    Dear Eric

I went to the British Film Institute the other weekend for a film festival and happened on their library. I asked the librarian to see if there were any cuttings about Ray and yourself. There were! and a google search led me to your wonderful, informative and magical blog.

My name is Denise and I am the eldest daughter of Jackie Poole nee Lockheart, who was Rays cousin. Rays Mother Quennie was her Aunt and my Great Aunt.

Over the years I have heard snippets from my family about you and Ray. It seems very sad that I did not have the privilege of meeting him. I am sitting with my mother Jackie as I write, and we are fascinated by your blog and the amazing life you have led. We do hope your recent hip operation is a success.

    With kindest regards

    Denise & Jackie

40 years of something beautiful. 40 years to remember. A lot of people would envy you that.

As a lover of London, and of old British films, your casually encountered blog is just a brilliant thing to me. Thank you.

    Chris

Hi, Ray was my Granddad’s (Douglas Norton) cousin once removed. My great Grandfather (Sydney Norton) was the younger brother of Dora, One Ray’s Grandmothers I believe. Is the photo of Ray and his grandmother one of Dora?

I first met the lovely Ray with you at April and Desmond’s Restaurant in I think 1973. I have such marvellous memories of that time. Eric you had a Yellow Rolls Royce. Do you remember when you and I went to see Larry Grayson at the Palladium. Noel Gordon was also on the bill.

Ray was as you said the sweetest and kindest soul. Eric I send you love and best wishes.

I’m just watching “The Final Test”. I was curious about this young man and there’s not much on the usual sites. I’m so glad you had your time together and sorry he was taken so early, my age next year. We are nothing without our dreams and memories. My very best to you x

Whilst researching family history in my local library I came upon an article about his disappearance that intriqued me from 1955 can you throw any light on this.
Having read your story of your life together you both sound like you had an interesting and fulfilled life together. I must try and find some of his films as up till now I wasn’t aware of him as I was only 5yrs old at time of article.

I have seen quite a few films of late (Aug/Sept 2020) on Talking Pictures with Ray Jackson in and I remembered him straight away, when I saw his 1953 film ‘The Final Test’ and what a fine handsome man he was. So, Eric what a super ‘couple’ you made each other so Happy too….But, very sad to read Ray was ‘taken’ so early….With Very Best Wishes for Your Memories and Happy Dreams for the future too……Thank You so much for everything that you have done to one and all….xx

Just watched ‘These Dangerous Years’ on Talking Pictures. So wonderful to see Ray onscreen. One of the kindest sweetest men it has ever been my pleasure to know.
    God Bless his memory.
